The conductor has not appeared. The audience is still settling in. Then one clear note rises from the stage, and the orchestra answers with a glorious tangle of sound.
That note is usually an A from the oboe. It lasts only a moment, but it gives dozens of musicians a shared reference before the first bar of music.
Here is the little pre-concert ritual in questions.
Why an A?
Musicians need to agree on what a named note means in physical terms. The international standard ISO 16 sets the A above middle C at 440 hertz. A sound at that pitch produces 440 pressure cycles per second.
That does not mean every orchestra always uses 440 Hz. Some tune a little higher, often to 442 Hz. The important part is agreement: the players need the same target on that stage, on that evening.
Once the reference sounds, musicians compare it with their own A and adjust. String players turn pegs or fine tuners. Woodwind and brass players make small changes to reeds, mouthpieces, barrels, joints, slides, and embouchure, depending on the instrument.
Why does the oboe get the job?
The oboe has a bright, concentrated tone that carries through a crowded stage. It is easy for players across the orchestra to find with their ears.
There is also a wonderfully awkward explanation: the oboe leads partly because it is not convenient to tune quickly.
A violinist can alter string tension. Many wind players can lengthen or shorten the vibrating air column by adjusting part of the instrument. An oboist can influence pitch while playing, but larger corrections depend heavily on the tiny double reed, whose dimensions and behavior were carefully prepared before the concert.
As Yamaha’s instrument guide puts it, the oboe is difficult to adjust suddenly. So instead of asking the oboe to chase the rest of the orchestra, the orchestra meets the oboe.
Why does tuning sound so untidy?
Because this is a workshop moment, not a chord in the score.
Players may use different octaves. Some enter immediately, while others listen first. A violin section brings bows and many nearly identical pitches; brass brings broad, strong tones; a flute may hover above the crowd. When two pitches are close but not quite matched, they can produce audible pulses called beats. As the pitches approach one another, those beats slow down.
The apparent jumble contains dozens of small comparisons:
- Is my note above or below the reference?
- Did the instrument warm up and shift?
- Does my section agree internally?
- Can I hold this pitch without forcing it?
The noise ends when those questions have useful answers.
Does one A tune every note?
Not perfectly. An instrument can agree on A and still need careful listening elsewhere. Temperature changes, reeds move, strings stretch, and different notes have their own tendencies. Musicians keep adjusting while they play, often without an audience noticing.
The opening A does something narrower and more practical. It establishes a common point from which all that later listening can begin.
Next time you hear the oboe before a concert, listen for what follows. The orchestra will sound scattered for a few seconds, then fall away. That brief commotion is not the music getting started badly. It is the musicians making sure they can start together.
